From Lesley in Australia
[26/06/05] My husband and I visited Goostrey in August, 03 and went to St. Lukes Church of England and found a gravestone around the right hand side of the Church belonging to my great great grandparents, John and Hannah Royle and his sister Sarah Royle, it was a very emotional moment as we didn't expect to find anyone. We cleaned it up a bit and then kept looking but no more. I was wondering if anyone in your district is related to them or doing a family genealogy search re the Royle family or you could please put me into contact with anyone. It would be greatly appreciated as my mother who is 93 has become fascinated with her side of the family and where they came from. |

I am tracing the Ridg(e)way family tree (paternal) and know that in the mid 1700s some of my ancestors lived in or around Goostrey. Can anyone shed any light on this? |

| Linda Deval (nee
Mottershead), Perth, Western Australia I am researching my family and have found my grandfather Harry Mottershead was born in Barnshaw/Goostrey in 1880. His parents John & Annie Mottershead farmed 35 acres and lived at Bellmarsh House. I have traced them to the Census of 1880. John Mottershead died in 1882 and Annie remarried a man called William Bracegirdle. There were six children, Annie, Mary, Emily, John, Frank and the youngest Harry. A stepdaughter Clara lived with them and married Thomas Johnstone from the Goostrey area. However I cannot seem to find when they left the area and where they went to, or what happened to the farm. Does anyone know the farm and who is living there now? |
